Malachi 2:14-16 14You cry out, “Why doesn’t the LORD accept my worship?” I will tell you why! Because the LORD witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young. But you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows.

15Didn’t the LORD make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth.  16“For I hate divorce!” says the LORD, the God of Israel.

“To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

The people were complaining about their adverse circumstances when they had only themselves to blame. People often try to avoid guilt feelings by shifting the blame. But this doesn’t solve the problem. When you face problems, look first at yourself. If you changed your attitude or behavior, would the problem be solved?

Divorce in these times was practiced exclusively by men. They were disloyal to their wives and ignored the wedding vows they had made before God, thus corrupting his purpose for them to demonstrate “oneness” with their wife and to raise children who loved God. Not only were these men unfaithful to their wives, but they also were ignoring the fact that this marriage relationship was to illustrate the nature of their union with God.

Lets Bring it Home:  “ Guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth” means to have the same commitment to marriage that God has to his promises with his people. We need passion in the marriage relationship to keep the commitment

I had to Repent and ask God for forgiveness for number 1 getting a divorce, and 2 for getting remarried.

This is a Vow some of us made before God.  But how many of us broken these vows due to our own desires or did not know what Bible said about Marriage and Divorce and making Vows to the LORD.  I feel before anyone gets married or even think about it needs to sit down with someone of faith and get this explain to them. Notice I did not say a Minister or Pastor, because all Ministers and Pastors do not preach this along with other Commands of the Bible.  I came up in a broken home, and I seen what it does to the family, I am still living in the consequences of divorce from my Mother and Father and my own divorce as I approach 60 years of age.  Yes, I am a divorce and remarried, and if I had this broken down like this to me, I would never had gotten remarried (Don mean I don’t love my current Wife), and probably would not have divorced.  My job now is to not let this happen to other people.    I know some strong Women who stayed after their Husband committed adultery.  That is the Worse part of the Vows.  Now they are still a family, and all together.  I commend all of you who were married for the first time and are still together today.

Think about it, the same Vow you made to God in the first marriage is the same when you get remarried.

Two Questions: Does God Allow Divorce and Does God allow for you to Remarry.

1 Corinthians 10:10-11 10But for those who are married, I have a command that comes not from me, but from the Lord. A wife must not leave her husband.  11But if she does leave him, let her remain single or else be reconciled to him. And the husband must not leave his wife.

Romans 7:1-3 1Now, dear brothers and sisters you who are familiar with the law don’t you know that the law applies only while a person is living? 2For example, when a woman marries, the law binds her to her husband as long as he is alive. But if he dies, the laws of marriage no longer apply to her.  3So while her husband is alive, she would be committing adultery if she married another man. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law and does not commit adultery when she remarries.

Paul uses marriage to illustrate our relationship to the law. When a spouse dies, the law of marriage no longer applies. Because we have died with Christ, the law can no longer condemn us. Since we are united with Christ, his Spirit enables us to produce good fruit for God. We now serve God, not by obeying a set of rules, but out of renewed hearts and minds that overflow with love for him.

Mark 10:11-12 10Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again (Divorce). 11He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her. 12And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.”

Matthew 5:31-33 “You have heard the law that says, ‘A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.’ 32But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. 33“You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the LORD.’

Divorce is as hurtful and destructive today as in Jesus’ day. God intends marriage to be a lifetime commitment (Genesis 2: 24). When entering into marriage, people should never consider divorce an option for solving problems or a way out of a relationship that seems dead. In these verses, Jesus is also attacking those who purposefully abuse the marriage contract, using divorce to satisfy their lustful desire to marry someone else. Are your actions today helping your marriage grow stronger, or are you tearing it apart?

Mathew 19-7-9“Then why did Moses say in the law that a man could give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away?” they asked. 8Jesus replied, “Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to your hard hearts, but it was not what God had originally intended. 9And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery unless his wife has been unfaithful.”

We know two things for sure. God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16), and God is merciful and forgiving. Every divorce is a result of sin, either on the part of one spouse or both. Does God forgive divorce? Absolutely! Divorce is no less forgivable than any other sin. Forgiveness of all sins is available through faith in Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:28Ephesians 1:7). If God forgives the sin of divorce, does that mean you are free to remarry? Not necessarily. God sometimes calls people to remain single (1 Corinthians 7:7-87But I wish everyone were single, just as I am. Yet each person has a special gift from God, 8So I say to those who aren’t married and to widows— it’s better to stay unmarried, just as I am). Being single should not be viewed as a curse or punishment, but as an opportunity to serve God wholeheartedly (1 Corinthians 7:32-36). God’s Word does tell us, though, that it is better to marry than to burn with passion (1 Corinthians 7:99But if they can’t control themselves, they should go ahead and marry. It is better to marry than to burn with lust). Perhaps this sometimes applies to remarriage after a divorce.

So, can you or should you get remarried? Can not answer that question. Ultimately, that is between you, your potential spouse, and, most importantly, God. The only advice here is for you to pray to God for wisdom regarding what He would have you do (James 1:5  5If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking).

Pray with an open mind and genuinely ask the Lord to place His desires on your heart (Psalm 37:4). Seek the Lord’s will (Proverbs 3:5-6) and follow His leading.

Malachi 2:16 “For I hate divorce!” says the LORD, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. “So, guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

Marriage is a work of God not man so only God can break it. Do you understand the seriousness of this passage?
