Under Gods Command

John 16: 1-5 “All this I have told you so that you will not go astray. They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God. They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. I have told you this; so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you. Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of your asks me, Where are you going?

Jesus warned them about further persecution. Saul (who later became Paul), under the authority of the high priest, went through the land hunting down and persecuting Christians, convinced that he was doing the right thing (Acts 9:1,2; 26:9-11). Although the disciples had asked Jesus about his death (13:36; 14:5), they had never wondered about its meaning. They were mostly concerned about themselves. If Jesus went away, what would become of them?

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Under Gods Command

John 15:17-19  This is the command: Love each other. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

Christians will get plenty of hatred from the world; from each other we need love and support. Do you allow small problems to get in the way of loving other believers? Jesus commands that you love them, and he will give you the strength to do it.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit-fruit that will last. The Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

Jesus made the first choice-to love and to die for us, to invite us to live with him forever. We make the next choice-to accept or reject his offer. Without his choice, we would have no choice to make.

Proverbs 24:17-18 Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn his wrath away from him.

David, Solomon’s father, refused to gloat over the death of his lifelong enemy Saul. On the other hand, the nation of Edom rejoiced over Israel’s defeat and was punished by God for their attitude. To gloat over other’s misfortune is to make you the avenger and to put yourself in the place of God, who alone is the real judge of all the earth.

Proverbs 19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction and in the end you will be wise.

Are you wiser today than last year? Than ten years ago? These are important questions to answer. How wise will you be later in life? A godly person will greatly desire to grow in wisdom. And the way to increase wisdom is easy – you need to hear the counsel of wise people and accept their teaching. You need to appreciate and apply instruction from others.
Today is your opportunity to change your latter end. Will you be an older wise man or women, sought by family and others for wise advice? Or will you be an old fool, more a burden than a blessing? What you do today determines what you are tomorrow! You are not too young, and you are not too old. Consider your latter end, and receive instruction today!

Proverbs 17:27-28 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. 28) Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.

This proverb highlights several benefits of keeping quit: (1) it is the best policy if you have nothing worthwhile to say; (2) it allows you the opportunity to listen and learn; (3) it gives you something in common with those who are wiser. Make sure to pause to think and to listen so that when you do speak, you will have something important to say.

Proverbs 13:13 He who scorns instruction will pay for it, but he who respects a command is rewarded.

God created us, knows us, and loves us. It only makes sense, then to listen to his instructions and do what he says. The Bible is his unfailing word to us. It is like an owner’s manual for a car. If you obey God’s instructions, you will “run right” and find his kind of power to live. If you ignore them, you will have break downs, accidents, and failures.

Proverbs 12:13 – An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble.

Sinful talk is twisting the facts to support your claims. Those who do this are likely to be trapped by their own lies. But for someone who always tells the truth, the facts-plain and unvarnished give an unshakable defense. If you find that you always have to defend yourself to others, maybe your honesty is less than it should be.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

John 13:36-38 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crow’s you will disown me three times!

Peter proudly told Jesus that he was ready to die for him. But Jesus corrected him. He knew Peter would deny that he knew Jesus that very night to protect himself. In our enthusiasm, it is easy to make promises, but God know the extent of our commitment. Paul tells us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought. Instead of bragging, demonstrate your commitment step-by-step as you grow in your knowledge of God’s Word and in your faith.

Under Gods Command

John 13:34-35 “A new command I give you.  Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples.  If you love one another.”  

Jesus says that our Christ like love will show we are his disciples.  Do people see petty bickering, jealousy, and division in your church? Or do they know you are Jesus followers and not just a fan by your love for one another?  Love is more than simply warm feelings; it is an attitude that reveals itself in action.  How can we love others as Jesus loves us? By helping when it’s not convenient, by giving when it hurts, by devoting energy to others welfare rather than our own, by absorbing hurts from others without complaining or fighting back.  This kind of loving is hard to do. That is why people notice when you do it and know you are empowered by a supernatural source.  The Bible has another beautiful description of love in 1 Corinthians 13.
