Under Gods Command (Warning Against Enticement)

Proverbs 1:10-19 (10): My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. (11): If they say, “Come along with us; lets lie in wait for someone’s blood, let’s waylay some harmless soul; (12): Lets swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; (13): we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; (14): throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse (15): my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; (16): for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. (17): How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! (18): These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves! (19) Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it.

Sin is enticing because it offers a quick route to property and makes us feel like one of the crowd. But when we go along with others and refuse to listen to the truth, our own appetites become our masters, and we’ll do anything to satisfy them. Sin, even when attractive, is deadly. We must learn to make choices, not on the basis of flashy appeal or short-range pleasure, but in view of the long-range effects. Sometimes this means steering clear of people who want to entice us into activities that we know is wrong. We can’t be friendly with sin and expect our lives to remain unaffected.

Under Gods Command

Proverbs 30:11-14 There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers, those who are pure in their own eyes and yet are not cleansed of their filth; those whose eyes are ever so haughty, whose glances are do disdainful; those whose teeth are swords and whose jaws are set with knives to devour the poor from the earth, the needy from among mankind.

This sequence of proverbs contains a fourfold description of arrogance. Notice that a life of pride and abuse of others often begins with a lack of appreciation for one’s parents. The command to honor one’s father and mother does create negative consequences when rejected.

Jesus encounters crucial events in Jerusalem
Lazarus Becomes Sick and Dies

John 11:5-7 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days. Then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tired to stone you, and yet you are going back there?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.”

Day symbolizes the knowledge of God’s will and reliance on his guidance, and night the absence of this knowledge combined with self-reliance. When we move ahead in darkness, we will be likely to stumble.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Religious Leaders Surround Jesus at the Temple

John 10:24-30 The Jews gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father’s name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

Many people asking for proof do so for the wrong reasons. Most of these questioners didn’t want to follow Jesus in the way that required them to submit to his leadership. They hoped that Jesus would declare himself Messiah for perverted reasons. These doubters hoped he would identify himself so they could accuse him of telling lies.

Just as a shepherd protects his sheep, Jesus protects his people from eternal harm. While believers can expect to suffer on earth, Satan cannot harm their soul or take away their eternal life with God. There are many reasons to be afraid here on earth because this is the devil’s domain. But if you choose to follow Jesus, he will give you everlasting safety.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Under Gods Command
Proverbs 16:5 – The LORD detest all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Pride is the inner voice that whispers, “My way is best” It is resisting God’s leadership and believing that your are able to live without his help. Whenever you find yourself wanting to do it your way and looking down on other people, you are being pulled by pride. Only when you eliminate pride can God help you become all he meant you to be.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd

John 10:17-18 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life only to take it up again. No one takes if from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

Jesus death and resurrection, as part of God’s plan for the salvation of the world, were under God’s full control. No one could kill Jesus without his consent.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Under Gods Command
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man but in the end it leads to death.

The “way that seems right” may offer many options and require few sacrifices. Easy choices, however, should make us take a second look. Is this solution attractive because it allows me to be lazy? Because it doesn’t ask me to change my lifestyle? Because it requires no moral restraints? The right choice often requires hard work and self-sacrifice. Don’t be enticed by apparent shortcuts that seem right but end in death.

Under Gods Command

John 8:11 Jesus forgives and tells the Adulterous Woman to “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

John 5:14 Jesus tell the paralyzed man “See you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”

God might have healed the paralyzed man, and forgave the adulterous woman, but he left them with commands to follow. The man was delighted to be physically healed, but he had to turn from his sins and seek God’s forgiveness to be spiritually healed. The woman had to leave her life of sin. God’s forgiveness is the greatest gift you will ever receive. Don’t neglect his gracious offer.

We don’t want our life on earth to be painful due to the sins we commit. We open the door and give the devil a foot hole into our lives when we carry these sins with us. We do not want to be beat up by the adversary on the daily.

We are not the judge of each other’s sin. God is the Judge who sees all and knows all. We need to start fighting today against the sins that have control over us. If there are any sins that we are currently in, or struggling with, let’s turn it over to God today and let’s start the spiritual battle. Remember, God already has the victory.

Remember James 1:2-3 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.

Let God be the one who places trials in our life. At least we know it is He who is placing more weight on the bar to make us stronger.

James 1:4-8 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and compete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he ask, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

I don’t want to miss out on my blessing due to the sin in my life. Confesses to God today and let the Lord be your Personal Trainer with your Spiritual Training.

Under Gods Command

John 6:64-68 Yet there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him.” From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go” You have the words of eternal life.

Why did Jesus words cause many of his followers to desert him? 1. Jesus was not the conquering Messiah-King they expected 2. He refused to give in to their self-centered request. 3. He emphasized faith, not deeds. 4. His teachings were difficult to understand and some of his words were offensive. As we grow in our faith, we may be tempted to turn away because Jesus lessons are difficult. Will your response be to give up, ignore certain teachings, or reject Christ? Instead, ask God to show you what the teachings mean and how they apply to your life. Then have the courage to act on God’s truth. There is no middle ground with Jesus. When he asked the disciples if they would also leave, he was showing that they could either accept or reject him. Peter knew there was no other way but to follow Jesus. Jesus alone has the words of eternal life. People look everywhere for eternal life and miss Christ, the only source. Stay with him, especially when you are confused or feel alone.

Under Gods Command

Proverbs 27:6 – Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Who would prefer a friend’s wounds to an enemy’s kisses? Anyone who considers the source. A friend who has your best interest at heart may have to give you unpleasant advice at times, but you know it is for your own good. An enemy, by contrast may whisper sweet words and happily send you on your way to ruin. We tend to hear what we want to hear, even if an enemy is the only one who will say it. A friend’s advice, no matter how painful, is much more valuable.
