Book of Judges 

Judges 10:10-16 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, “We have sinned against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals.”  The LORD replied, “When the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines, the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?  But you have forsaken me and served other gods, did I not save you from their hands?  But you have forsaken me and served other gods, so I will not longer save you.  Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.  Let them save you when you are in trouble!”  But the Israelites said to the LORD, “We have sinned.  Do with us whatever you think best, but please rescue us now.” Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD.  And he could bear Israel’s misery no longer. 

These verses show how difficult it can be to follow God over the long haul.  The Israelites always seemed to forget God when all was well.  But despite being rejected by his own people, God never failed to rescue them when they called out to him in repentance.

Lets bring it home: God never fails to rescue us either.  We act just like the Israelites when we put God outside our daily events instead of at the center of them.  Just as a loving parent feels rejected when a child rebels, so God feels great rejection when we ignore or neglect him.  We should strive to stay close to God rather then see how far we can go before judgment comes.

Proverbs 19:20 Listen to advice and accept instruction and in the end you will be wise. 

Are you wiser today than last year? Than ten years ago? These are important questions to answer. How wise will you be later in life? A godly person will greatly desire to grow in wisdom. And the way to increase wisdom is easy – you need to hear the counsel of wise people and accept their teaching. You need to appreciate and apply instruction from others.

Today is your opportunity to change your latter end. Will you be an older wise man or women, sought by family and others for wise advice? Or will you be an old fool, more a burden than a blessing? What you do today determines what you are tomorrow! You are not too young, and you are not too old. Consider your latter end, and receive instruction today!

Proverbs 13:10 Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice. 

“I was wrong” or “I need advice” are difficult phrases to utter because they require humility.  Pride is an ingredient in every quarrel.  It stirs up conflict and divides people.  Humility, by contrast, heals.  Guard against pride.  If you find yourself constantly arguing, examine your life for pride.  Be open to the advice of others, ask for help when you need it, and be willing to admit your mistakes.

Proverbs 11:27 He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it. 

What are your goals? What is your reputation? How does your life affect others? If the answer to all three questions is doing good and helping others, you will obtain the blessed favor of God and men. If the answer is to serve yourself and cause trouble for others, then certain punishment is coming from God and men.

This proverb offers blessing or trouble. Which will you choose? The key is how you treat others. If you are good to men, you will be blessed. David and Peter wrote, “For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no deviousness: Let him avoid evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil”.

If you are selfish or hurtful to others, if you are critical or negative, if you are bitter or envious, or if you sow discord or irritate others, then you are in for a painful and troubled life. It is that simple. As the saying declares, “What goes around comes around

Proverbs 10:19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. 
 
Simple rule of wisdom is to cut your words in half. Many words and much speaking greatly raise the chance of sinning with your lips. Because of this sober risk, wisdom teaches you to reduce your number of words and hold your peace. A wise man reflects soberly after speaking very much, for he remembers the grave warning of the first half of this proverb. If he spoke quite a few words, he has probably sinned in his speech and appears a fool. In this context, silence is very golden! So the God of wisdom tells you to be faster to hear and slower to speak. If you emphasized listening and being skillful at that, you would have little time for talking. If you were slow and reluctant to speak, you would have an excellent spirit. Wisely consider your words before you speak, rather than regret them after they are out. Have you not wasted many painful hours reviewing words you spoke? Have you often said, “I wish I’d never said that,” or, “Why did I say that?” Such misery could be reduced, if you would simply refrain your lips from idle or foolish speech. If you would hold your tongue, you would not have to worry about words that escaped.

Proverbs 5:11-14 – At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent.  You will say, “How I hated discipline! How may heart spurned correction.  I would not obey my teachers or listen to my instructors.  I have come to the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly.”     

At the end of your life, it will be too late to ask for advice.  When desire is fully activated, people don’t want advice they want satisfaction.  The best time to learn the dangers and foolishness of going after forbidden sex (or anything else that is harmful) is long before the temptation comes.  Resistance is easier if the decision has already been made.  Don’t wait to see what happens.  Prepare for temptation by deciding now how you will act when you face it.

Proverbs 3:21-26 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your site; they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck. Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble; when you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.
 
What is the difference between sound judgment and discernment? Discernment (or discretion) is the ability God gives to many people to think and make correct choices. Sound Judgment, however, he give only to those who follow him. Sound judgment includes discernment, but goes beyond it. It also includes the knowledge that comes from instruction. Training, and discipline, and the insight that results from knowing and applying God’s truth.

Proverbs 2:6-7  For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.  He hold victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless. 

 God gives us wisdom and victory but not for drifting through life or acting irresponsibly with his gifts and resources.  If we are faithful and keep our purpose in life clearly in mind, he will keep us from pride and greed.

 Proverbs 28:09 – If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law even his prayers are detestable.

God does not listen to our prayers if we intend to go back to our sin as soon as we get off our knees.  If we want to forsake our sin and follow him, however, he willingly listens-no matter how bad our sin has been.  What closes his ears is not the depth of our sin, but our secret intention to do it again.  God hears our intentions as clearly as he hears our words.

Proverbs 27:21 – The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives.     

Praise tests a person, just as high temperatures test metal.  How does praise affect you? Do you work to get it? Do you work harder after you’ve gotten it? Your attitude toward praise tells a lot about your character.  People of high integrity are not swayed by praise.  They are attuned to their inner convictions, and they do what they should whether or not they are praised for it.
