Under Gods Command
Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet

John 13:12-17  When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus did not wash his disciples feet just to get them to be nice to each other. His far greater goal was to extend his mission on earth after he was gone. These men were to move into the world serving God, serving each other, and serving all people to whom they took the message of salvation.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Under Gods Command
Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet

John 13:3-9 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet? Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head was well!”

Imagine being Peter and watching Jesus wash the others feet, all the while moving closer to you. Seeing his Master behave life a slave must have confused Peter. He still did not understand Jesus teaching that to be a leader, a person must be a servant. This is not a comfortable passage for leaders; a person must be a servant. This is not a comfortable passage for leaders who find it hard to serve those beneath them. How do we treat those who work under us (whether children, employees, or volunteers)?

When Jesus responded: “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me,” he may have meant (1) that unless he washed away Peter’s sins by his death on the cross, then Peter could have no relationship with him, or (2) that unless Peter submitted to him and allowed Jesus to minister in this way, Peter would never learn the lesson of humility. Either way, Peter seemed to grasp the significance of Jesus words, for he then wanted to be bathed completely: “Not just my feet by my hands and my head as well!!”

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Under Gods Command

Proverbs 28:05 Evil men do not understand justice, but those who seek the LORD understand it fully.

Because justice is part of God’s character, a person who follows God treats others justly. The beginning of justice is concern for what is happening to others. A Christian cannot be indifferent to human suffering because God isn’t. And we certainly must not contribute to human suffering through selfish business practices or unfair government policies. Be sure you are more concerned for justice than merely your own interests. You can’t claim to follow God and ignore your neighbor.

Under Gods Command

Proverbs 27:6 – Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.

Who would prefer a friend’s wounds to an enemy’s kisses? Anyone who considers the source. A friend who has your best interest at heart may have to give you unpleasant advice at times, but you know it is for your own good. An enemy, by contrast may whisper sweet words and happily send you on your way to ruin. We tend to hear what we want to hear, even if an enemy is the only one who will say it. A friend’s advice, no matter how painful, is much more valuable.

True love wounds! Kisses often lie! Here is a great proverb of true friendship and love. No matter what you think, true friends wound each other – they correct, rebuke, and warn each other for their mutual perfection. These faithful gestures of love are precious. On the other hand, false friends may easily show much outward affection or attention, which are a lying cover for their selfish hearts. Lord, give us wounding friends!

Solomon rejected the world’s idea of love. If we believe their love songs, they think love is pleasure taken from another person. Consider, “If you can’t be with the one you love, then love the one you’re with,” and, “Will you still love me tomorrow?” The words, “I love you,” are to many just a lie to get something from another. Of course, if both persons are lying and taking from each other at the same time, they call that “great chemistry.”

Who cares if you send cards, kiss, or say the three words? They are not proof of anything of value! They might very well be cover for your selfish ambition to take advantage of another person! Who cares if you shake hands, smile a lot, and give many compliments? Flattering others to obtain their response for mutual self-love is disgusting! These are not evidences of friendship or love. Only wounds show true friendship and love!

True friendship and love give! And they give for the benefit of others! Love is selfless! Lust is selfish! True love is finding the blessing in giving to another. Since pleasing God and having a good account on the Day of Judgment are life’s greatest goals, the highest measure of love is helping another meet those goals).
If you truly love another person, all your actions toward them will be governed by the goals of helping them please God and prepare for the Day of Judgment. Therefore, you will correct, rebuke, and warn as necessary. You will not coddle, compromise, or overlook actions that hurt their relationship with God or lead to sin in their life. Godly love will not cover sins: it will correct sins. It will not condone evil; it will condemn evil.

This truth about friendship and love is too high for most. They believe the devil’s lie that friendship and love are seeking pleasure and keeping things comfortable, happy, and peaceful in relationships, regardless of another’s conduct. But if you truly care for a person, you will want to help perfect them If you do not rebuke their sin, you hate them!

What kind of friend do you want? What kind of friend are you? Do you want one who pampers your fancies and flatters your vanity? One who enjoys your presence, cheers you with kindness, and serves you? Such a friend will not help. You are a sinner; you need a real friend, who will watch for your soul and correct you when necessary. The other kind is quite worthless, very deceitful, and will leave you wanting in the time of real need.
Godly men are anxious to have their faults pointed out, and they are very grateful when another will perform the selfless act (Ps 141-5: Let a righteous man strike me –it is a kindness; let him rebuke me-it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it).

Where can you find godly friends described and implied by this proverb? In a true church of Jesus Christ, where the duties and privileges of friendship and love are exemplified, taught, promoted, and required. You need the body of Christ, made up of unique members chosen by God, for maximizing your spiritual prosperity!
Who loves you the most? The one having the most mutual pleasure with you, or the one doing the most for you? If you learned from this proverb, you know it is the one doing the most for you. If you are one of God’s elect, Jesus Christ gave His life for you and lives today for you. And He wisely chastens your every fault for your perfection in holiness. He is the greatest Friend you will ever have!

Under Gods Command

John 13:3-6 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Jesus was the model servant, and he showed his servant attitude to his disciples. Washing guests feet was a job for a household servant to carry out when guest arrived. But Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist, as the lowliest slave would do, and washed and dried his disciple’s feet. If even he, God in the flesh, is willing to serve, we his followers must also be servants, willing to serve in any way that glorifies God. Are you willing to follow Christ’s example of serving? Whom can you serve today? There is a special blessing for those who not only agree that humbles service is Christ’s way, but who also follow through and do it.

Under Gods Command
Proverbs 23:13,14 – Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die. (14) Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.

Corporal punishment for children is a mandate from heaven. It is not an option, suggestion, or theory. Its purpose is simple – save children from unnecessary death. Any person debating or opposing this mandate is an accomplice in child murder, for he is rejecting the best means of saving children’s lives! Let God be true, but every man a liar!

The correction described here is corporal punishment of children, for it is the use of a rod on children. Our grandparents understood it well, for spanking was obvious to their sober minds. The rod had much to do with the former greatness of America and the tranquility of its society. Let the Britannica Encyclopedia (14th Edition) comfort the feebleminded:

FLOGGING has been one of the most universally utilized methods of punishing public crimes, as well as a means of preserving family, domestic, military and academic discipline.

The instruction from God and Solomon is not to withhold this form of correction from children. It must be administered to save their lives, and it should be done early (13:24 19:18). It is the mark of true love (3:12 13:24) for parents with a great desire for their children’s futures will want to drive the foolishness out of their hearts (22:15) (29:15-17).

Parents rejecting the rod hate their children and cause them harm. Any sentimental drivel is irrelevant, for their actions prove disregard for their children’s future. Sober obedience to authority saves lives; but grounding them or withholding an allowance will not train it.

How can children die? A thousand ways! Suicide is self-murder by un-ruled emotion! Undisciplined children disobey speed limits, drug laws, gun laws, and police authority. They flaunt anger, envy, and pride, which can cause fatal conflicts. Undisciplined children violate marital and other sacred trusts, which can bring murder or public execution. Of course, Solomon wrote under a government practicing capital punishment!

But there are other ways to die. Some jobs are dead end, because an untrained child never learned to obey authority and get along with others. Some marriages are dead, because the child’s inherent selfishness destroyed their spouse. Other relationships can die as well (Luke 15:24). A soul can practically die from pain and trouble caused by his foolishness.

Corporal punishment consistently and lovingly administered will prevent these different ways people die. Turning a person back to truth saves a soul from death and hides a multitude of sins (James 5:19-20). God has spoken; this issue is not debatable (Ps 119:128)

Under Gods Command

Proverbs 22:06 – Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it.

Child training works! A properly trained child will fear God and live a wise and righteous life as an adult. An untrained child will not fear God or live a wise and righteous life as an adult. Only a miracle of grace can undo poor child training. God is faithful. His Word is true. Do not question this promise. Exceptions do not alter the rule. Believe it! Do it!
There is no secret or mystery here. Slothful parents hunt for special methods to train their children. They are always looking, reading, buying books, and attending seminars, but they are hardly ever training. Action is more important than technique. Consistency is more important than intensity. Stop looking for an easier or smarter way. Get busy!
This proverb is a commandment, not a suggestion. It is a promise, not a possibility. Bible believers trust this rule as much as any other verse. They are not intimidated by the task before them. They put their trust in the precious Scripture, and they get to work, today!
Solomon said, “Train.” He did not say raise. We raise vegetables, but we train children. Feeding a child nutritious meals, providing warm clothing, giving him his own bedroom, and kissing him good night is not training. Most every species of animals does these things for their young. Training a child is calculated instruction and discipline to form long-term character and wisdom in the fear of the Lord and knowledge of Scripture.
We train them “up.” This describes the period from birth to maturity. Training can begin immediately, as infants can be taught a feeding schedule and that not all crying gets immediate attention. It progresses from a control stage to an instruction stage, then to a counseling stage. It continues through puberty and a whole new set of issues. It continues to maturity, when a young adult creates a new home and starts the process again.
We train them up “in the way.” Parents cannot train every step, but they can train the way (Gen 18:19). God gives them to us with a blank slate for a mind. We fill that mind with godly knowledge and wisdom. As Scripture does not dictate every step of our lives, allowing us much individual liberty, so we train them in the way of godliness.
They are to be trained up in the way “they should go.” It cannot be the way they want to go. Each child defaults to foolishness and sin from our first parents. Without training against that default instinct, they will grow into committed and hardened sinners. No training is default training – you will have a fool for a child (29-15). The way they should go is the way of righteousness laid out plainly in Scripture (Duet 6:4-9; Eph 6:4)
When they are “old,” they will follow the training. Here is a promise to be believed, but it also allows for possible difficulties during adolescence, or the teenage years, before they are “old.” Properly trained as a child, the teenage years do not have to be difficult. If trained consistently, they will revert to that training as an adult. Believe it! Count on it!
What is child training? It is a consistent example of righteous living that the child can first feel and then observe as they grow up. It is teaching the existence of God and the absolute authority of the Bible. It is enforcing God’s rules and parental authority strictly and severely. It is teaching by reproof and the rod. It is teaching by repetition throughout the day. It is using both positive and negative reinforcement for behavior. It is a very open relationship with children, allowing them to know you and learning them well.
What is not child training? Yelling is not child training. Sending them to a Christian school is only a part of child training. Browbeating or nagging them is not child training. Spurts of rules and punishment is not child training. “Time out” is not child training. Playing catch in the yard is not child training. Sesame Street is not child training. Putting the mother in charge is not child training. Rocking them tenderly is not child training. Giving them an allowance without hard labor is not child training.
Previous generations grew up on farms observing the training of animals. If they did not train certain animals, they would either starve or be severely handicapped. Child training was easy after watching colts broken and mules trained for the plow. There is no rocket science here, and the search for new or creative techniques misses the boat. Any parent can train their children, if they will flush their selfishness and slothfulness and get busy! It is shame that seeing-eye dogs can be trained, but children cannot!
The children of this generation are a mess. They are arrogant, foolish, ignorant, immature, lazy, profane, rebellious, selfish, and wasteful. There is an obvious cause for their personal and social dysfunction. Their parents were too busy, selfish, and lazy to train them. The consequences are a generation of fools, which will beget more fools. Our nation’s future is bleak, not because of Washington, but because of foolish parents.
Let the righteous arise! Every godly parent should seize this proverb as his own and get to work. Godly and wise descendants are one sentence away (with a little regular effort)! Give a reasonable and consistent effort, and trust the Lord for the rest (Palms 127:1-2). He can multiply a few loaves and fishes to feed a great multitude with much left over. He can bless your efforts to bear the fruit of righteous children, who will rejoice your heart. There is no reason to be defeated! There is every reason to be elated! Lord, help us!

Under Gods Command
Jesus Summarizes His Message

John 12:47-50 “As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So what ever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”

The purpose of Jesus first mission on earth was not to judge people, but to show them the way to find salvation and eternal life. When he comes again, one of his main purposes will be to judge people for how they lived on earth. Christ’s words that we would not accept and obey will condemn us. On the day of judgment, those who accepted Jesus and lived his way will be raised to eternal life and those who rejected Jesus and lived any way they pleased will face eternal punishment. Decide now which side you’ll be on, for the consequences of your decision last forever.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (6) in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.

Jesus Summarizes His Message

John 12:44-46 “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

We often wonder what God is like. How can we know the Creator when he doesn’t make himself visible? Jesus said plainly that those who see him see God, because he is God. If you want to know what God is like, study the person and words of Jesus Christ.

Under Gods Command

Proverbs 21:23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.

Here is truth and wisdom! If you rule your speech, you will save yourself from trouble. Your mouth and tongue are two of your greatest enemies. If you will keep them under control and only speak the right words at the right time, your life will be blessed. It is ungoverned speech that gets men into all sorts of trouble. Here is wisdom for a good life.

  • You can get into trouble by filthy talking, foolish talking, and jesting. You can damage your reputation, hurt others’ feelings, and waste time with such talking. God despises such speech, though they are very popular with the present generation; and He is coming soon to judge the world for these very sins
  • You can get into trouble talking negatively about others. Men will know you are wicked, and you will create enmity and strife. Though easy to commit, the blessed God hates backbiting, slander, talebearing, and whispering. They are much like murder, in that they destroy another’s
  • You can get into trouble by complaining. Who likes a complainer? The LORD hates complaining, and He judges it. Jesus Christ is coming soon with angels to judge complainers. It is God’s will for your mouth and tongue to give thanks. Our generation is unthankful, so God has judged our nation with darkness and sodomy (Rom 1:20-27) (II Tim 3:2).
  • You can get into trouble by over committing. Solomon warned his son about taking on the obligations of others as a surety, such as cosigning loans hastily or extensively. It is so easy and thrilling to offer your guarantee for the performance of another, because it gives you an important role. But wisdom should guard your mouth from creating unnecessary and excessive obligations.
  • You can get into trouble by vows to God. In the difficulties of a painful situation, it is easy to promise things to God to move Him to deliver you. But the Lord warns against such oaths (Eccl 5:1-3)). It is better not to vow at all, than to vow and not pay (Eccl 5:4-7).
  • You can get into trouble by name-calling. Jesus Christ taught that name-calling without a holy cause was a violation of the sixth commandment, the law against murder. Railing and reviling, which are name calling and abusive language, are condemned by Scripture (Ex 22:28) (1 Cor 5:11 6:10) (1 Peter 3:9) A child that cursed his parents died under Moses’ law. (Proverbs 20:20) (Ex 21:17) (Lev 20:09) (Deut 27:16)
  • You can get into trouble by lying. Everyone hates a liar. No one can trust a liar. Severe punishments are reserved for liars and perjurers. And all liars shall spend eternity in the lake of fire. Honesty in all situations is not only the best policy; it is the holy requirement of the God of truth.
  • You can get into trouble by disrespecting authority. Do not curse the king (President) even in your thoughts or bedroom (Eccl 10:20). A little bird will carry the wicked words, and you will be in trouble. God despises those who speak evil of rulers (II Peter 2:10); (Jude 1:8-10) Children must honor parents, wives their husbands, employees their employers, and church members their pastors. (Eph 5:33; 6:1-3: 1 Thes 5:12-13; Titus 2:9-10; 1 Pet 3:5-6)
  • You can get in trouble by hurting those around you. Unkind words can easily hurt spouses, children, and friends. Harsh words stir up anger and cause fights to escalate. Relationships are destroyed, bitterness is created, and your future dulled by hard words. It is the man and woman with gracious speech that will be held in high esteem. And it is a command to use gracious words.

How can you avoid trouble with your mouth and tongue? First, cut your words in half, for many words always contain sin (Pro 10:19). Second, slow down and emphasize listening before speaking (Pro 29:20); (Jam 1:19). Third, remember that you will give an account for every idle word and be judged for your words (Matt 12:34-37). Fourth, pray like David, “Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips”.
Rather than trouble, the man who guards his mouth and tongue will enjoy the good life, guaranteed by the infallible word of God. “What man is he that desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile”(PS 34:12-13). Peter also quoted these wonderful words of promise (1 Peter 3:10)
There was never trouble for the Lord Jesus Christ by His mouth and tongue. He spoke like no other man in the world’s history. There was nothing to charge Him for at His trial, so the Jews falsely accused Him by perverting His pure words (Matt 26:59-61). His pure words will soon judge their sins (Matt 7:21-23).
